Santa Marta Birding Tour in Colombia
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, an isolated mountain range in northern Colombia that separated from the Andes millions of years ago, features a topography of steep altitudinal gradients with peaks exceeding 5,700 meters and diverse habitats, ranging from tropical dry forests at sea level to cloud forests. It is one of the hotspot with a unique evolutionary history of speciation, resulting in one of the most extraordinary areas of bird endemism in the world, and is home to around 30% of Colombia’s endemic birds.
The surrounding areas, including Tayrona National Park, Minca, and the San Lorenzo Ridge, harbor additional species unique to the Colombian Caribbean. This eight-day tour offers the opportunity to observe approximately 300 bird species, including more than 20 endemics, providing a unique experience to explore one of Colombia’s most biologically distinctive regions.
Key species:
Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, Scaled Dove, Russet-throated Puffbird, Santa Marta Antbird, Santa Marta Foliage-gleaner, Santa Marta Woodstar, Santa Marta Warbler, Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Antpitta, White-tipped Quetzal, Rusty-headed Spinetail, Groove-billed Toucanet, Vermilion Cardinal, Chestnut Piculet, Tocuyo Sparrow and Buffy Hummingbird.
